IES Exam Category-wise Eligibility


A. Citizen of India B. A subject of Nepal C. A subject of Bhutan D. A Tibetan Refugee who is permanently staying in India until January 01, 1962 E. Indian origin individual from Pakistan, Burma, Sri Lanka or East African countries of Kenya, Uganda, the United Republic of Tanzania, Zambia, Malawi, Zaire and Ethiopia or from Vietnam with the intention of permanently settling in India Note: Candidates in B, C, D and E categories need to have a certificate proof of eligibility issued by the GOI. An offer of appointment will be issued on the submission of the eligibility certificate copy.

Age Limit

At least 21 years old and not above 29 years old on August 01, 2019.


SC/ST candidates relaxed upper age limit up to 35 years.

OBC candidates- relaxed upper age limit up to 33 years.

Candidates from the State of Jammu & Kashmir staying from January 1980 to December 1989 relaxed upper age limit of up to 35 years.

Candidates Ex-servicemen- relaxed upper age limit of up to 35 years. This relaxation is subject to Commissioned Officers and ECOs/SSCOs, who have been in the Military Services for at least 5 years as on August 01, 2019. The ex-servicemen should have completed assignment or in process of completion due within one year from August 01, 2019.

Minimum Educational Qualifications

a) Engineering degree holder from a University recognized under the Act of the Central or State Legislature in India. b)An engineering degree holder from any other Educational Institutions set up under an Act of Parliament or declared to be deemed as Universities u/s 3 of the UGC Act, 1956. c) Engineering students who have cleared Sections A & B of the Institution Examinations of the Institution of Engineers (India). d) Candidates who have secured an Engineering degree or diploma from a foreign University or College and Institution recognized by the Government of India. e) Candidates who have cleared the Graduate Membership Exam of the Electronics and Telecommunication Engineers (India). f) Candidates who have cleared the Associate Membership Exam Parts II and III/Sections A and B of the Aeronautical Society of India. g) Candidates who have cleared Graduate Membership Examination of the Institution of Electronics and Radio Engineers, London held after November 1959 Note 1. Candidates who have appeared for any of the above-exams and awaiting their results are considered eligible to apply for the IES exam. Their admission, however, is provisional and can be cancelled if they fail to submit the proof of passing the exam.


Note 2. Only in certain cases, the UPSC may accept candidate applications who do not necessarily qualify as mentioned above but are qualified candidates from other educational institutes considered to be at par (in standards) in the opinion of the UPSC IES examination authorities.

Note 3. Any qualified candidate from a foreign university not recognized by the GOI can apply subject to admission at the UPSC discretion.
